It is important to plan the style and layout of your garden before commencing with the project. Many people do their garden in stages, not really knowing what they want to achieve, and by the end the garden unfortunately looks like a patch work quilt with an identity crisis.

The first thing you need to think about is how are you going to use the space in 1-5 year’s time. Families grow and shrink and circumstances change, so it is important that these things can be anticipated where possible. This should give you an idea of where your entertaining area will be, the clothesline, shed, concrete/paved areas, garden beds, vegie boxes, etc.

The next thing you need to think about is the style or type of garden you want. Will it be tropical, native, cottage, formal, informal, contemporary, etc. This will determine what kind of plants you put in your garden and the type of materials. Will you have curved edging or straight edging? Will you use large format rocks to break up large garden beds? Will you use synthetic or natural turf – no turf? It is handy to have a general idea of what you want to do with your garden to assist the landscape gardener upon his/her arrival for the quote.
